Royal Pier Waterfront development moves forward

*8 September 2010

Three developers have been shortlisted to develop one of the south coast’s most exciting waterfront opportunities, Royal Pier Waterfront in Southampton.

This is an important step in the future development of this key site. The developers have been shortlisted by Southampton City Council, in discussion with its partners The Crown Estate and Associated British Ports (ABP), who jointly own the site.

Councillor Royston Smith, Leader of Southampton City Council, said: “Developing Royal Pier Waterfront has been a long time coming, and I am excited we are now moving forward, short listing three strong developers.

“Despite the current financial climate Southampton continues to attract interest for major developments in the city.

“Royal Pier Waterfront is a unique opportunity for development partners, not only to become part of one of the most dynamic cities emerging in Europe, but also to create a legacy in Southampton of which they can be truly proud.”

Over the coming months the developers will prepare concept scheme proposals which will include their initial design ideas.

Developers will need to show as part of their proposals that there is a permanent and improved site for the Southampton International Boat Show, how they will preserve and improve Mayflower Park and how they will improve pedestrian public access to the waterfront.

The preferred developer is expected to be selected in March 2011. No further information can be given at this stage due to the commercially sensitive nature of the process.

The Royal Pier Waterfront opportunity comprises of:

• Land bound by Herbert Walker Avenue and West Quay Road

• Land bound by West Quay Road and Harbour Parade (the De Vere Hotel and harbour parade car park)

• Mayflower Park

• Foreshore and seabed adjacent to Mayflower Park

• Red Funnel’s Ferry terminal, Royal Pier pavilion and the derelict pier
